The Mighty River Suir Poc Fada 2016

The Mighty River Suir Poc Fada 2016 is a fundraiser in aid of Waterford Marine Search and Rescue and Pieta House South East. The challenge is for the competitors to try and puc a sliotar with a hurley over the mighty river Suir from a platform based in the Merchants Quay car park over the river Suir to the North Wharf, a distance of approximately 150 meters. We are hoping that all the hurling and camogie clubs in Waterford and Kilkenny turn out over the weekend to support this great event. We are hoping also to have the Waterford and Kilkenny Senior hurling teams joining us on one of the days to see which team can complete the challenge and take the title of champion of the MIGHT RIVER SUIR PUC FADA 2016, as well as meeting some great people and spreading the word IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK and help to try and beat the stigma around suicide and mental health. Maurice Shanahan and John Mullane have committed to supporting this great event. Venue: Merchants Quay car park Dates: 17th and 18th September 2016. Time: 10 am untill 6pm each day Price: €2 per sliotar or 3 for €5 Music and prizes on the day A platform will be erected by Mullally scaffolding in the Merchants Quay car park (behind the Bus Station) It will be the same height as the glass wall where you will be able to try your best to hit a sliotar across the mighty river Suir. HikeCycle 2016

This Saturday July 23rd is HikeCycle 2016. In Aid of Waterford Marine Search and Rescue and Carrick Search and Rescue. Hike only, Cycle only or do both 🙂 To make sure that HikeCycle 2016 is a safe event, we have a strict speed limit in place during the cycle of (20-22kph). We understand that some parts of the road will be faster than others but we must stress that if you break away from the pack and out of the relative safety of the pace car, you will no longer come under the cover of the event insurance… HikeCycle 2016 is NOT a race. It will however be a good test of endurance, stamina and lots of fun. Registration is from 8am sharp until 9:30am at which point we will start the first half of the cycle. If you do not register in time, you cannot take part in the event. So please make sure you are registered before 9:30am. Before the start of the event we will hold a short briefing with all participants outlining rules and what is the order of the day, including safety on the road, Bike storage/security, Hike, Changing facilities, and not forgetting BBQ. If you are participating in the ‘Hike’ only, you will need to register with our team in Kilcash village on the day at 11:00am where you will be briefed and given instruction. And finally, please have your sponsorship cards with you on the day and any monies will be collected by our team. Thank you for your help and cooperation. https://www.facebook.com/HikeCycle2016/?fref=ts

Waterford twins honoured as Volunteers of the Year 2013

Twins Darryl and Declan Barry from Waterford Marine Search and Rescue who were named as Volunteers of the Year last night in the Volunteer Ireland Awards. Twin brothers from Waterford city, who have helped save some 69 lives, were last night named as Volunteers of the Year in the awards scheme organised by Volunteer Ireland. In January 2010, Darryl and Declan Barry set up Waterford Marine Search and Rescue to provide Waterford city with a voluntary 24-hour, year-round search and rescue service. Since then the organisation has grown to involve 40 volunteers and helped to save 69 lives. The Barry brothers received the award at a gala ceremony in Dublin last night. The Barrys are at the organisation?s base seven days a week and often stay late into the night making sure that the service is working to its full potential. The voluntary service also operates a weekend suicide prevention patrol system which the pair developed. This patrol is now spreading nationwide, with several other communities adopting the approach. Distress They were nominated for an award by fellow volunteer David Hearne who said the brothers had changed the lives of hundreds of people by setting up the organisation. ?If we get called out to a person in distress at three in the morning they will be there along with the rest of the crew,? said Mr Hearne. Ten other volunteers won awards. They were: John Power, Dunmore East Tidy Towns, Waterford; Alice Mannion, Kilmurry Drama Group, Roscommon; Frankie Forde Waldron, Mayo-Roscommon Hospice; Killian O?Reilly, For?ige Bundoran, Donegal; Daniel Downey, Cavan Community Radio and others; Fintan Mulligan, 121digital, Ashford, Wicklow; Lorraine Dempsey, Special Needs Parents Association, Aughrim, Wicklow; Anne Copplestone, The Hope Foundation, Cork; Liam Hendry assisting Leo Garvey, Ballina, Mayo; John McCarthy, Irish Wheelchair Association Sport, east Cork. Commitment Chief executive of Volunteer Ireland Yvonne McKenna congratulated all the award recipients and nominees and thanked them ?for their commitment and dedication to making Ireland a better place to live in?. More than 13,500 volunteers have registered through volunteer.ie and local volunteer centres so far this year. These volunteers have built up 439,000 hours of voluntary work, estimated to have an equivalent value of almost ?10 million.
